Summer Running Logs!
I have taken time this year to provide 3 different logs. Incoming 6th graders have to run 75 miles over the summer to have completed the challenge. Incoming 7th graders have to run 85, while incoming 8th graders have to run 100 miles to complete the challenge.
Below are 3 different logs....one for each mileage total. It is not to your advantage to run way more than the mileage listed above. If you exceed by a handful of miles that is great, but to exceed by dozens of miles is more than likely only making you tired before the season begins. Each log has a general idea for each week how many miles per week you need to put in to accomplish the goal. It also lists POSSIBLE run lengths for that week. You can fill the mileage however you want and do not have to follow these guidelines exactly. The totals come out exact so if you miss a mile or 2 one week you'll have to make them up somewhere else!
Download and be ready to get to work! We don't know what the season may hold but we hope to put these miles to good use! Have fun!

SUMMER RUNNING!
Why? Running during the summer has 2 main benefits. First, it helps establish a base level of fitness before the season begins. Second, it helps to prevent injury during the season. Nothing can guarantee no injury, but preparing the body is the best idea. How Often? Make sure you're always taking at least a couple (2 or 3) days off every week during the off-season. You're not trying to get fast...just trying to get out and move a little! Try starting with a couple days a week and build up as the summer goes on. How fast/far? Your summer miles should be nice and easy unless you want to do a 5K (older runners maybe, but not necessary). It is best to just take nice easy jogs through the summer that are a couple miles long, and if the younger runners can only go for a mile, that's great! There are a number of websites where you can map out distances in your neighborhoods (mapmyrun.com). Another way to gauge distance is by time. You might take a 10 minute jog for a younger beginner or a 20 or 30 minute jog for a more experienced runner. When should I start? Go ahead and run! A good goal for younger runners might be to make it to 50 total miles before the season starts and older runners might shoot for 75 - 100. It seems like a lot, but if you're running a couple miles 3 or 4 times a week, it will build up quickly! |
TEAM SUMMER RUNNING!
Each year we have just a few opportunities to get together and run as a group. It can be a fun time as well as help to motivate yourself to take a few jogs as we approach the season. You should begin doing some summer running to prepare for the season as soon as you can, but in the middle of July we get together to run at school. Below are the dates and times for our summer runs. If you are in town, please come join the group. It is a good idea if you are around and it can have an impact on your season! If you're out of town, don't worry about it. Take advantage of being in a different place and run a little wherever you are! Where? MJHS Who? Anyone preparing to run a cross country season. When? July 10 and 13 - 5-6PM at MJHS July 17 - 5-6PM at Four Seasons Park in Shorewood July 20 - 5-6PM at MJHS July 24 - 5-6PM at Hammel Woods in Joliet July 27 - 5-6PM at MJHS |
